Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, our professional driver guide will warmly welcome you. You will then embark on a 3-4 hour scenic journey to Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo, DRC. Enjoy the majestic landscapes and unique natural settings along the way, passing through local communities. Upon reaching Virunga National Park, you will proceed to the lodge for check-in, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Early Morning Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
After a relaxed breakfast, head to the Bukima park station in Virunga National Park. Here, you will join other trekkers at 7:00 am for gorilla group allocation and a briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette. Following the briefing, you will start your trek to meet your assigned gorilla group. The duration of the trek can vary depending on the gorillas’ location and weather conditions. Observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a unique and awe-inspiring experience. You will have one magical hour to observe and photograph the gorillas. After this incredible encounter, return to the trekking base and then to your hotel/lodge for a late lunch and relaxation.

Day 3: Early Morning Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
After breakfast, embark on a 30 km transfer from Mikeno Lodge to Kibat Patrol Post at the base of Nyiragongo Volcano. At the trailhead, park rangers will lead you, along with porters, on a hike to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano. The hike takes approximately 4-6 hours and is relatively easy but can be strenuous in hot conditions. Along the trail, you may spot rare bird species and small mammals. Upon reaching the summit, you will marvel at the views of the bubbling lava lakes and relax at the volcano’s rim. Spend the night in tents on the crater’s edge, high above the active lava lake.
Day 4: Descend from Nyiragongo Volcano and Transfer to Kigali
After an early morning breakfast, begin your descent from the summit of Nyiragongo at 7:00 am, heading back to Kibat Patrol Post. Arrive at the trailhead before lunch and transfer back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. After lunch, journey from Mikeno Lodge to Kigali City. Upon arrival in Kigali, your driver guide will take you to your Kigali lodge or drop you off at Kanombe Airport for your onward flight.
